The World Ends With You features a cast of exciting characters that stand out from others in the genre, helping to provide the unique gameplay and the engaging story the series is known for. Chief among these characters are the Reapers, who aim to stop you from succeeding by creating obstacles to hinder your progress.

The Reapers are recognizable by their black wings, in the case of the Shibuya Reapers, and their ability to control the Noise to erase players and gain points to move up through the ranks. They play a big part in the series - making sure the Reapers' Game runs smoothly by erasing those that fail to complete the daily missions. These harbingers of death are as powerful as they’re entertaining, providing some of the best boss fights and memorable scenes in the series.
THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY
10/10 Megumi Kitaniji: The World Ends With You
Kitaniji is one of the most powerful Reapers in the series, acting as Conductor of the Reaper's Game. He loves the city of Shibuya, brainwashing everyone to stop humanity's cruelty, which he believes is caused by our differences. He despises individuality and is ruthless in his quest to save the streets he loves by sacrificing the thoughts of those that inhabit Shibuya.
He represents the hatred that might have overcome Neku had he not realized the value of reaching out to others, ultimately failing in his plot to save Shibuya where Neku succeeds.
9/10 Mitsuki Konishi: The World Ends With You
As a Reaper, Konishi is ruthless and intelligent, willing to do anything to earn a promotion. During her time as Game Master in Week Three, she uses cunning, deception and violence to succeed - erasing a fellow Reaper, 777, for helping Beat and Neku, and threatening to kill Rhyme. Her calculated and aggressive nature sets her apart from the lower-ranked Reapers, culminating in one of the most visually interesting boss fights in the series.
In her Noise form, Tigris Cantus, she takes on the appearance of a humanoid tiger, issuing out devastating attacks by creating shadow versions of herself to attack you. It’s only by using the Rhyme pin that Konishi’s Noise form is defeated, ending her feud with the Bito siblings once and for all.
8/10 Tsugumi Matsunae: The World Ends With You And NEO: The World Ends With You
Tsugumi is a mysterious Reaper, with little being known about her role within the Shinjuku Reapers prior to NEO. In NEO, it’s revealed that her soul was trapped in Mr. Mew during the Inversion of Shinjuku, with the possessed version of her body robotically carrying on her duties as Reaper.
Related: Things That Make No Sense In Neo: The World Ends With You
Her interesting backstory and mysterious presence in the series cements her place as one of the most memorable Reapers. Design-wise, she is a unique character as she wears headphones similar to Neku’s and carries around Mr. Mew, created by Shiki. She links together the design elements of the first game with the plot involving the Shinjuku Reapers of the sequel, which she plays a huge role in.
7/10 Coco Atarashi: The World Ends With You And NEO: The World Ends With You
First introduced in Solo Remix, and returning in Final Remix, Coco played a large role in the Switch version's exclusive epilogue. What makes Coco unique is her fashionable character design, which is brighter than most of the other Reapers, and her excitable way of speaking, using lots of internet acronyms.
Despite acting younger than her age, she has a manipulative side too and isn’t afraid to show off her deviousness. She uses Neku in her plot to save her friend, Tsugumi. Don’t be fooled by her appearance; this Reaper should not be underestimated.
6/10 Kaichi "Susukichi" Susuki: NEO: The World Ends With You
Susukichi is part of the Ruinbringers and is revealed to be a Shinjuku Reaper, using his powerful abilities to ensure his team stays on top during the Reapers' Game.
Despite his intimidating appearance, he’s upbeat and takes great joy in overcoming his competitors, taunting the Wicked Twisters at every turn, and making them look for him throughout Shibuya. It’s revealed in NEO that he cares deeply for his fellow Shinjuku Reapers, asking the Wicked Twisters to defeat Shiba when he begins to disregard his colleagues.
5/10 Uzuki Yashiro: The World Ends With You And NEO: The World Ends With You
Uzuki is a recurring character in the series, alongside her partner Kariya, whose hotheaded nature leads her to throw herself into her duties as a reaper, erasing players without mercy in the hopes of gaining a much-desired promotion.

What makes Uzuki such a great character is the way she grows throughout the series. In The World Ends with You, Uzuki is unsympathetic, even going as far as to manipulate Neku into nearly killing his partner, Shiki, by convincing him that she is a spy for the Reapers. Whereas, in NEO, she shows her love for Shibuya, helping Rindo to stop the Shinjuku Reapers from destroying the city.
4/10 Koki Kariya: The World Ends With You And NEO: The World Ends With You
Often seen alongside his partner, Uzuki, Kariya is most well known for his seemingly endless supply of lollipops and his laid-back attitude. Despite being a powerful Reaper, he prefers to spend his time relaxing; disregarding his duties, much to the ire of Uzuki.
This carefree Reaper is unlike any in the series, providing some of the funniest moments, showing the playful side of the afterlife by not taking his job too seriously. He will underhandedly help you as you traverse the Reapers' Game, appearing to have no interest in the competitive side of the Underground, despite his power.
3/10 Reaper Beat: The World Ends With You
Beat is a favorite of the series and his brief time spent as a Reaper provides some of the game’s most memorable moments. After joining the Reapers in the hopes of finding a way to revive his erased sister, Rhyme, he turns against his previous allies, helping to hunt them down in a shocking turn of events.
He provides some of the most emotional scenes in the series, as our former hero joins the bad guys (much like other characters in JRPGs). Although, he subverts this trope, as even when working as a Reaper, he doesn’t lose his morals and even puts his life at risk to rescue Neku when he’s put in a life or death situation - alone in the Reapers’ Game with no partner to pair up with.
2/10 Shoka Sakurane: NEO: The World Ends With You
Shoka is a party member in NEO who starts off as a Reaper, secretly helping the Wicked Twisters to avoid erasure. This Gatto Nero enthusiast plays a huge role in the game, lending her strength to your party as she fights against her former colleagues. She’s one of the most well-developed Reapers in the series, as she starts the game rude and standoffish, but eventually opens up about her feelings, forming a close bond with Rindo.
Her open discussion about her apathy for life that led her to choose to become a Reaper, and the relationships she forms with the Wicked Twisters, make her a standout character in the series.
1/10 Sho Minamimoto: The World Ends With You And NEO: The World Ends With You
This spirited Mathematician is most known for his funny one-liners and difficult boss fights. Originally introduced as an antagonist in the first game, and briefly becoming a playable character in the sequel, he has a big role in the series, helping to drive the story forward.
Despite providing much of the comic relief in the series, he still proves to be a fearsome foe, using Taboo Noise to attempt to become the new Composer. His encounters are some of the most memorable in the series, and you’ll struggle to get his catchy boss music out of your head long after you finish playing.
